STATEMENT CONDEMNING RUSSIA’S INVASION OF UKRAINE
March 4, 2022
Misaki Setoyama, President, Japan Playwrights Association
Members of the Japan Playwrights Association
We, members of the Japan Playwrights Association, strongly condemn the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
We object to all killing. For more than 2,000 years, theater has upheld the belief that human life is the most precious thing and that people with different ideas can coexist while protecting each other's freedom.
The wisdom of Russia's outstanding playwright, Anton Chekhov has transcended national borders as well as time, illuminating the future for those of us living in the present day. It is a matter of great regret that Russian people are forced to participate in a war they do not want to fight and that their words are ignored.
We stand in solidarity with our colleagues connected through art and with all the heartbroken people of the World who are against these cruel acts.
We call on the Russian government to immediately cease its military actions and to engage in peace talks.
